Mission: Presente! Maine is a grassroots organization that fights to empower displaced Indigenous and Afro-Latinx peoples of Maine through survival programs, community power building, cultural celebration, and transformative healing practice. Presente envisions a world where all peoples enjoy their rights to joy, beauty, wellness, food, land, and home.

✧ Presente! targets three key program areas: Community Health and Wellness (Bienestar), Food Sovereignty and Land Stewardship, and Leadership & Community Power Building. 

✧ Since 2020, we have led critical initiatives to get people fed, prevent eviction, advocate for public health emergency funds for community-based organizations across Maine, deploy public health response, restore indigenous foodways, and win Mainecare for people regardless of immigration status, all while working with a small staff and a few dedicated volunteers.

We are seeking a Site Coordinator to oversee the day-to-day maintenance and general upkeep of our land (located in Greene, ME), growing spaces, buildings, and infrastructures. The primary goal is to create an aesthetically pleasing, intentional, and functional space for the community to gather in celebration, recreation, and learning. The Site Coordinator will be responsible for  planning and executing both large and small building and physical infrastructure projects within deadlines with the support of the Food Sovereignty team.

✦  ✦ Responsibilities ✦  ✦

  • Maintain food growing spaces by providing groundskeeping support

  • Build and maintain fencing to protect crops from wildlife

  • Help maintain physical infrastructure on our farm land

  • Assist in maintaining and enhancing the managed landscape, including mowing, string trimming, and keeping walking paths accessible

  • Develop, document, and implement an annual cyclical schedule for maintenance tasks

  • Conduct annual bush hogging of meadows

  • Perform daily building cleaning, maintenance, and trash and recycling disposal

  • Coordinate volunteers for maintenance projects as necessary

  • Coordinate and communicate with the Food Sovereignty Director regarding projects, needs, materials, supplies, and contractors required to support projects

  • Perform general building maintenance and repair projects, as well as seasonal tasks

  • Perform routine maintenance and repair on various mowers, power tools, and other landscape equipment

  • Conduct winter snow clearing operations, including snow blower operation, hand shoveling, and tractor operation (including weekend storms)

  • Conduct monthly building and site inspections and maintain records

  • Assist with the setup of events and programs

  • Collaborate with Land Stewards and the Food Sovereignty Director on projects integrating the managed landscape with Food Sovereignty goals

  • Assist in the acquisition of supplies such as compost, manure, woodchips, rented power tools, and other equipment

  • Assist with preparation and design of the lower hemp field for planting in 2024

  • Co-design and support building projects for fall 2023 and spring 2024 with the Food Sovereignty Director and team, including referring out to contractors who specialize in specific work

Requirements

  • Commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice

  • Excitement and passion for plants, food, medicine, and community!

  • A combination of at least two years of education, experience, and training in gardening, medicine-making, community building, and/or cooperative projects

  • Excellent  time management skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask

  • Excellent oral communication skills (excellent written communication skills also preferred)

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Task management skills, including task prioritization, results oriented, time management, and follow-through with commitments

  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and access to a personal vehicle

  • Ability to stand and walk the grounds frequently and tolerate varying climate conditions

  • Ability to lift and carry 50+ lbs frequently

  • Ability to push and pull 50+ lbs occasionally

  • .Ability to travel in own vehicle or carpool in Presente’s truck to and from the farm, office, warehouse, and beyond

  • Ability and willingness to work through conflict, ask for support, and communicate needs

Strongly preferred: Fluency in Spanish and English

✧  Rate of pay: $56,000 - $58,000

  • Extended Breaks:

    • Summer closure (2 weeks)

✧  Anticipated start date: August 1, 2023 or sooner

✧  Expected Hours: Full-time (40 hr/week)

  • Monday-Friday, with varied hours between 8 am to 6 pm, including 1-hour lunch breaks and frequent water breaks.

  • Weekends and evenings are sometimes required, with at least one Saturday per month.
